RISEUP International – Digital Justice

RESISTANCE BY DESIGN

Digital Justice

We design and build OpenSource solutions so that everyone can access, understand, and shape technology.

// OpenSource Movement

Since 2005, RISEUP International has advanced Human Rights by increasing access to education, technology and the arts. Our grassroots programs are initiated, and lead by the communities that we’ve served in over thirty countries.

Transparency

Open source enables public scrutiny, faster innovation, and bias mitigation in technology development.

Community

Our programs are initiated and led by the communities we serve across thirty countries.

Empowerment

We create pathways for people to become creators of technology, not just consumers.

// The Issue

Right now, a few big companies build Tech & AI in secret “black boxes.” Many barriers exist for digital justice.

Hidden Bias

Algorithms can favor some groups over others without anyone noticing.

No Access

Not everyone has the ability to freely communicate and learn.

Lack of Control

People don’t know how their data is gathered, used, sold—and can’t fix it.

Widening Gaps

Pay-to-play system benefits only those with money, leaving marginalized groups behind.

Proprietary = Corporate Control

Closed-code programs put developers in power over users, treating them as consumers not creators.

Outcome

Data breaches, identity theft, biased decisions—and whole communities left powerless.

// Our Solution

Digital Justice through four foundational pillars that transform technology from a tool of control to one of liberation.

1

Open

Provides spaces through which people can investigate community problems, generate solutions, create media and tech, organize together.

Why It Matters

Open source is essential for trustworthy AI, enabling faster innovation, bias mitigation, and public scrutiny. Anyone can inspect and improve it, mistakes get fixed faster and trust grows.

2

Access

Integrates media and tech into education in order to transform teaching and learning, to value multiple learning styles.

Why It Matters

Digital justice ensures that all members of our community have equal access to media and technology, as producers as well as consumers. Digital justice values all different languages, dialects and forms of communication.

3

Local Power

Digital justice advances community-based economic development by expanding technology access for small businesses, independent artists and other entrepreneurs.

Why It Matters

Putting the power back in the hands of people without needing to rely on big corporations. Advances our ability to tell our own stories, as individuals and as communities. It enhances data protection and privacy.

4

Digital Skills

Teach practical tech and internet skills from basics to in-demand career paths.

Why It Matters

Empowers people to use, understand, and even build new digital tools for jobs and daily life. Locally run AI become hubs for creation vs consumption and eliminate waste. It’s better for the planet.
